PTI Protest: Petroleum Supply Disrupted in Lahore, Threat of Petrol Pumps Closing

Due to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protests and the closure of roads and highways, the supply of petrol has been disrupted, creating the risk of petrol pumps closing.

Petrol pump owners have informed the government that only one day's supply remains in the Lahore region. If the supply is not restored, the petrol pumps will shut down.

Malik Jehanzaib, Secretary Information of the Petrol Pump Owners Association, in an exclusive conversation, stated that the daily petrol requirement in the Lahore region is 1.3 million liters. Due to no supply over the past four days, most petrol pumps have started using their stockpiled reserves.

He further mentioned that if the supply is not restored within the next one to two days, many petrol pumps will be completely shut down.

On the other hand, in response to the situation caused by the protests, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has sought assistance from law enforcement agencies to ensure the uninterrupted supply of petroleum products. This decision was made after consulting with the Petroleum Division.

According to OGRA’s spokesperson, measures are being taken to ensure the continuous delivery of oil tankers carrying petroleum products. Efforts are being made to facilitate the delivery of oil tankers to petrol pumps, with coordination from chief secretaries and local administrations.

The spokesperson added that a communication channel has been established between Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) and the local administration to address any disruptions in the delivery of oil tankers.

Meanwhile, in Gujranwala, several petrol pumps have shut down due to a shortage of petrol. The supply of petrol and diesel at 145 pumps in the Gujranwala region has been affected, causing difficulties for the public.

Yesterday, the Petroleum Division instructed the administrations of Rawalpindi, Islamabad, and Lahore to ensure an uninterrupted supply of petroleum products due to the lockdown situation in these cities caused by the protests.

The Petroleum Division sent a letter to the Chief Secretary of Punjab and the Commissioners of Lahore and the twin cities, urging them to ensure the continuous supply of petroleum products despite the lockdown. The letter noted that the protests have limited the movement of oil tankers carrying crude oil to Attock Oil Refinery and other petroleum products, and the administration was advised to issue special instructions for the smooth supply of petroleum.

It is noteworthy that the PTI convoy coming from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to protest in Islamabad has reached Zero Point from 26 Number Chowk, and now at D-Chowk, where heavy shelling was used by the police to disperse the protesters, while the workers responded by throwing stones.
