Every year, chip manufacturers boast about their ability to produce 3nm or 4nm chips, making us believe this is a major breakthrough in the technology we use daily. However, they never explain why it matters and what the actual benefits are.

What is a Nanometer?

A nanometer (nm) is a unit of measurement, equal to 0.0000000004 meters. It’s so small that it’s invisible to the naked eye and extremely delicate.

In the world of processors, nm refers to the size of the chip’s node. A 6nm chip uses 6nm transistors, while a 4nm chip uses 4nm transistors. However, this isn't entirely true.

In reality, the "nm" label is more of a marketing term than an accurate measurement. For instance, a 14nm chip from one manufacturer can be similar in size to a 7nm chip from another manufacturer.

Do Smaller Nodes Actually Matter?

Smaller nodes offer two key advantages:

  1. Higher transistor density
  2. Better energy efficiency

With a 4nm process, more transistors can fit on the chip compared to a 6nm chip. However, it doesn’t directly translate to 33% more transistors due to other design complexities.

Additionally, smaller transistors consume less power, improving battery life. However, other improvements in chip architecture play a bigger role in efficiency than the node size alone.

Why the "nm" Number is Mostly a Marketing Gimmick

Chipmakers love to highlight their "smaller node size", as it’s easier for consumers to understand that 4nm sounds better than 6nm. However, real-world performance improvements come from other engineering advancements, not just shrinking the transistor size.

So, Does It Really Matter to You?

In reality, you won’t notice the difference between a 4nm and a 6nm chip in daily use. The improvements are subtle and only engineers truly understand their significance.

The reason Apple or Qualcomm’s latest chip performs better is not just because of the smaller transistors, but due to enhanced chip architecture and design innovations.

Unless you compare a 4nm chip with an ancient 28nm chip, the size itself doesn’t make a huge difference.
