Gboard for Android Introduces Dynamic Color Theme

Gboard for Android Introduces Dynamic Color Theme

After a year of testing, Gboard has rolled out major changes to its Dynamic Color Theme through a server-side update.

What’s Changing?

Previously, Gboard’s Dynamic Color Theme used four distinct color sets for:

  • Letters
  • Shift, Emoji/Comma, Period, and Backspace keys
  • ?123 key
  • Enter key

With the new update, several keys now share the same color, including:

  • Shift, Emoji/Comma, Period, Backspace, and ?123
  • Enter key (bottom-right corner)
  • 2×2 grid icon (top-left corner) for accessing additional functions

This change applies to both phones and tablets, creating a more uniform and consistent keyboard appearance. The Dynamic Color still adjusts based on your wallpaper, and the dark theme now appears even darker.

When Will You Get It?

The beta version of Gboard introduced this update in late October, and it later rolled out to the stable version.

As of today, Gboard version 14.9 is seeing a widespread release of these Dynamic Color updates across both stable and beta channels.

How to Enable It?

If you don’t see the changes yet, try:

  1. Force-stopping Gboard from App Info
  2. Switching between system light and dark themes to trigger the update

Beta-Only Update: New 2×2 Icon Design

For users on the beta channel, Gboard has also updated the 2×2 icon. It’s no longer inside a circle, which breaks its visual alignment with the voice search button.
