Google is moving closer to its vision of creating a “personal, proactive, and powerful assistant” with two major additions to the Gemini app: Personal Context and Temporary Chat.
At Google I/O, Google outlined its plan for Gemini to be an assistant that doesn’t just reply generically but adapts to you — remembering what matters to you, understanding your style, and making interactions more relevant.
With Personal Context turned on, Gemini will gradually build an understanding based on your earlier conversations, retaining key facts and preferences you’ve shared in the past. Previously, users had to explicitly ask Gemini to recall old discussions; now, the assistant does this automatically, creating “more natural, highly relevant conversations — like collaborating with someone who already knows the background.”

If you’ve discussed the evolution of powers in a comic book you love, and later ask for birthday party ideas, Gemini could design a theme inspired by that character — complete with matching snacks, props, and a personalized photo booth.

If you’ve previously brainstormed YouTube ideas centered on Japanese culture, Gemini might later recommend a “My First Time Trying…” video concept, where you record yourself tasting a Japanese dish, making traditional crafts like origami or participating in a tea ceremony, or even trying a sport from Japan.
When the rollout completes, a new Personal Context settings page will appear in the account menu, replacing the existing “Saved Information” section. The “Past Chats with Gemini” option will be switched on by default but can be turned off whenever you choose. This update starts today for free and paid users in selected countries using Gemini 2.5 Pro, with expansion planned for Gemini 2.5 Flash and more regions (including the EEA, UK, and Switzerland) in the coming weeks.
Temporary Chat acts as an incognito mode for Gemini, allowing private, one-off conversations that won’t influence future responses or personalization.
In this mode:

Chats won’t be visible in your conversation history or listed under Gemini’s activity log.

They’re kept for a maximum of 72 hours solely so Gemini can complete your request and handle any feedback you provide.

Information from these chats will not be used to train Google’s AI models or tailor your experience.
To start one, open the side menu and tap the new chat icon next to “New Chat.” Instead of the normal welcome, you’ll see a clear “Temporary Chat” label along with privacy details. The feature starts rolling out today and will reach all users within the next few weeks.
In addition, Google is renaming the “Gemini Apps Activity” option to the clearer “Keep Activity.”

If enabled, a small sample of your upcoming uploads may be used to help improve Google services for everyone.

If the activity setting is currently off, it will remain off until you decide to activate it.

A new toggle is being added to decide whether audio, video, and screen shares (via the microphone button or Gemini Live) can be used for service improvements. This option will be off by default.
