Arshad Nadeem makes history by winning Pakistan's first medal in the World Athletics Championships
Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan won the silver medal in the javelin throw final of the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, the first time any Pakistani athlete has won a medal in the history of these world championships.
According to a report in the Dawn newspaper, Arshad Nadeem's throw of 87.82 meters in the World Athletics Championships javelin throw final was his best of the day, moving him from sixth to second place, while India's Neeraj Chopra finished first.
Chopra set the bar by throwing the javelin 88.17 meters in his first attempt. Arshad Nadeem tried to close the gap of less than half a meter in his next three attempts, but the Pakistani athlete who won gold in Birmingham last year with a throw of 90.18 meters was unable to do so.
However, Arshad Nadeem still managed to finish second in the javelin throw of the championship in Budapest, Hungary, and made history by winning Pakistan's first silver medal in the World Athletics Championships.
His achievement is also remarkable in the context that he has competed in his first world championships in over a year and has won a medal.
After winning gold at the Islamic Games last year, Arshad Nadeem underwent surgery on his elbow and knee and then underwent a long rehabilitation process.
Arshad Nadeem threw the javelin 74.80 meters in his first attempt, 82.81 meters in his second attempt, and 87.82 meters in his third attempt to move to second place behind Chopra.
In his fourth attempt, he threw 87.15 meters, and in his sixth attempt, he threw 81.86 meters. His fifth attempt was ruled a foul.
The battle between Arshad Nadeem and Chopra for the gold medal continued until the final throw, where Arshad Nadeem tried to throw a longer throw but his final throw was 81.86 meters and he managed to finish in second place.
After winning Pakistan's first silver medal in the World Athletics Championships, Arshad Nadeem celebrated his historic achievement by prostrating in gratitude.
