Lucid Motors has officially opened orders for its all-electric Gravity SUV, a highly anticipated model set to enter production by the end of this year. Interested buyers can now secure a reservation on the company’s website for the "Grand Touring" variant with a $1,000 refundable deposit, with prices starting at $94,900.
Much like Lucid's current model, the Air sedan, the Gravity is a high-performance electric vehicle. The company has promised that the Gravity will deliver a range of over 440 miles on a full battery, powered by two electric motors delivering an impressive 828 horsepower. Gravity offers more versatility than the Air, coming standard with two rows of seats and offering an optional third row for up to seven passengers.
The launch of Gravity is critical to Lucid’s future. While the company has seen increased sales for its Air sedan after reducing prices and introducing a more affordable variant, it still trails behind the ambitious sales targets set during its $4 billion public offering in 2021. Consequently, Lucid has repeatedly turned to its majority stakeholder, Saudi Arabia, for additional funding this year.
The Gravity SUV’s design is likely to attract North American buyers, potentially boosting overall sales. However, the more affordable "Touring" version, starting at $79,900, won’t be available until late 2025. Additionally, the Grand Touring version’s price can quickly surpass its base price, as highlighted by car reviewer Kyle Conner following the launch of Lucid’s Gravity SUV configurator on Thursday.
One of Lucid’s biggest challenges has been affordability, especially as its vehicles don’t qualify for federal EV tax credits due to their high prices. Lucid vehicles are eligible for a $7,500 tax credit only if leased. This could depend on the federal tax credit landscape next year, once President-elect Donald Trump takes office.
