Google Nest Teases "More Helpful Smart Home Devices" in the Coming Months

After discontinuing the Nest Protect and Nest x Yale Lock yesterday, Google Nest reaffirmed its commitment to developing smart home devices.

In its announcement about “upcoming changes to our device portfolio”, Google Nest confirmed the end of production for two aging products:

  • Nest Protect (second-gen smoke and CO alarm, released in 2015)

  • Nest x Yale Lock (launched in 2018)

While these devices are being phased out, third-party alternatives are emerging with modern connectivity and comparable features.

Google Nest’s Smart Home Vision Remains Strong

Addressing concerns, Google Nest clarified in a FAQ:

Does this mean Google Nest is no longer making smart home devices?
Not at all! Last year, we introduced our most intelligent and stylish thermostat yet—the 4th-gen Nest Learning Thermostat—along with the Google TV streamer, a premium device designed for smart home and entertainment needs. Expect more helpful home devices in the coming months and years.

The 4th-gen Nest Learning Thermostat now leads Google’s smart home lineup, following a nine-year gap after the previous generation. However, Google still offers the 2020 Nest Thermostat as an alternative.

Google Nest’s Current Smart Home Portfolio

In 2021-2022, Google expanded its Nest Cam and Doorbell lineup, introducing:

  • Nest Cam (Outdoor/Indoor, Battery-powered)

  • Nest Cam + Outdoor Power Cable

  • Nest Cam with Floodlight

  • Nest Cam (Indoor, Wired)

  • Nest Doorbell (Wired or Battery-powered)

The Google TV streamer is another key product, though it's unclear if Google will introduce a budget-friendly version in the future. Explore the complete selection of Google Nest devices.

What’s Next for Google Nest?

One of the biggest questions remains Google’s plans for smart displays and speakers. The Gemini-powered Google Assistant is still in testing, working on existing hardware. However, it’s uncertain whether this launch will coincide with new devices.

The mention of "coming months" in Google’s statement is notable—suggesting that updated speakers and smart displays with built-in cameras could be among the next hardware releases.
