Increase in Ruling Coalition’s Seats in the National Assembly After Court Verdict

Following a verdict by the Supreme Court's constitutional bench, the ruling coalition has gained additional seats in the National Assembly.

Before the decision regarding reserved seats, the ruling coalition had a total of 218 members in the party position breakdown.
This included 110 members from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), 70 from Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), 22 from Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Pakistan, and 5 from Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q).

According to the party position, the opposition parties had a total of 100 members, including 80 from the Sunni Ittehad Council, 8 independents backed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and 8 from Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F).

Following the Supreme Court's decision, PML-N has received 15 additional seats, PPP 4, and JUI-F 3.

With these additional seats, PML-N now has 125 members in the National Assembly, PPP has 74, and JUI-F's strength has increased to 11 members.

As a result of the added seats, the ruling coalition has now achieved a two-thirds majority. In the 336-member house, 224 members are required for a two-thirds majority; the ruling coalition now has the support of 237 members.

It is noteworthy that the Supreme Court's constitutional bench approved the review petitions regarding reserved seats with a 7–5 majority. In its brief judgment, the Court nullified the July 12 ruling and upheld the Peshawar High Court’s decision of not granting reserved seats to the Sunni Ittehad Council.
