Government Reducing Expenses by Firing Low-Level Employees Instead of Officers

Economist Dr. Qaiser Bengali has resigned from the government's Austerity Committee.

Dr. Qaiser Bengali sent his resignation from the Austerity Committee to Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and Cabinet Secretary Kamran Afzal. He was also a member of the Right-Sizing Committee and the Committee on Government Expenditures.

Dr. Qaiser Bengali stated that the three committees on reducing government expenditures are very important, and they have provided recommendations for cost-cutting.

He mentioned that 70 government institutions and 17 state-owned corporations were reviewed, and it was proposed that 17 divisions and 50 government departments should be closed to reduce expenditures. However, the government is taking actions contrary to the committees' recommendations.

According to Qaiser Bengali, instead of removing officers, low-level employees are being laid off to reduce expenses, and the jobs of officers in grades 17 to 22 are being protected. If high-ranking officers were removed, it could reduce annual expenses by 30 billion rupees.

He added that contrary to the recommendations, the government is firing employees from grades 1 to 16. The economy is heading towards disaster and is on life support due to debt. Dr. Qaiser also noted that the IMF and other institutions are not willing to provide loans, the household budget in the country has been destroyed, and people are committing suicide.
