PM Shahbaz Sharif's dinner to the allies, claiming that the number for the constitutional amendment is complete

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and the President of Pakistan have invited all allies to a dinner regarding important amendments in Parliament. The dinner will include consultations with the members on the proposed legislation in the House. However, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) will not be attending the Prime Minister’s dinner. Notably, the government is nearing a two-thirds majority required for legislation on extending the retirement age of judges and increasing the number of judges in the higher judiciary. Sources indicate that the ruling coalition has claimed to meet the number requirements for the joint session and proposed constitutional amendment.

According to sources, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and PPP have achieved significant success in the number game for the government coalition through their strategic efforts.

Both the Presidency and the Prime Minister’s House have become active regarding upcoming important legislation and amendments, each inviting members of different government allied parties to separate dinners today. However, PPP members only attended the dinner hosted by President Asif Ali Zardari.

The President's dinner included attendees such as Bilawal Bhutto, Asifa Zardari, Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani, Khurshid Shah, former Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, and Governor Faisal Karim Kundi.

President Asif Ali Zardari also invited members of the PML-N, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), and other allies to the dinner.

At the Presidential dinner, attendees included PPP, Q League, Istiqbaal Party, and Awami National Party (ANP) members.

Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider, Anwar-ul-Haq Kakar, Chaudhry Salik Hussain, Abdul Aleem Khan, and ANP Chief Senator Aimal Wali Khan were also present at the consultative meeting.

In his address, President Zardari emphasized the need to strengthen parliamentary democracy and promote political stability.

He stated that political unity is essential to address the country’s political, economic, and security challenges. He also stressed the importance of promoting tolerance, mutual respect, and strengthening democratic institutions.

President Zardari mentioned that improving service delivery, achieving economic prosperity, and implementing political, economic, and governance reforms are crucial, urging a commitment to work beyond group interests for public welfare.

He expressed opposition to the politics of confrontation that harms the country.

During the dinner, members of Parliament from various political parties proposed different suggestions for stability and public relief.

Members also praised President Zardari’s political wisdom and vision in fostering consensus on national issues.

Prime Minister’s Dinner to the allies

On the other hand, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif hosted a dinner for all government allied parties today. The dinner was attended by members of the PML-N, MQM, and other allied parties.

The dinner hosted by the Prime Minister for Parliament members has concluded. The Prime Minister instructed members to stay in Islamabad and took them on board regarding the current situation.

Government Coalition’s Two-Thirds Majority Claim

After the dinner, the ruling coalition claimed to have met the number requirements for the joint session and proposed constitutional amendment.

The government aims to bring a constitutional package that includes extending the retirement age of judges and increasing the number of judges in the higher judiciary.

The coalition claims to have achieved a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly, with the addition of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) support requiring three more votes.

Sources state that the leadership of PPP and PML-N is in full contact with JUI-F’s leadership, and JUI-F will support the government in the proposed amendments.

There is a national expectation of securing the required 64 votes in the Senate.

Sources also indicate that the constitutional amendment will pertain to the higher judiciary, including proposals to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court and extend the retirement age for judges.
