Google Unveils New Gemini Icon on Android and iOS, Bringing Visual Consistency and Functional Enhancements

This week, both Android and iOS versions of the Gemini app received a visual refresh, marked by the rollout of a redesigned app icon that aligns with Google’s signature four-color branding. The updated emblem features Google's iconic palette—blue, red, yellow, and green—blended into a sleek gradient design, mirroring the aesthetics seen across the company’s ecosystem.

Primarily blue on the right, the new icon subtly transitions across the spectrum with rounded, softened points—ditching the previous sharp geometry in favor of a friendlier, more approachable visual tone. A notable gradient appears on the top-left, similar to the current stylized “G” Google uses elsewhere. Importantly, the design has been fine-tuned for smaller displays, ensuring that it maintains clarity and avoids fading into overly thin lines when viewed as a home screen shortcut.

In terms of proportions, the icon is slightly larger than its predecessor, occupying more of the white circular backdrop. This change enhances visibility and reinforces brand recognition. By adopting Google’s trademark color language, Gemini is now visually integrated into the broader family of first-party apps—a subtle signal of trust and platform maturity. Despite the colorful shift, the new design remains distinctive enough to avoid confusion with other Google app icons.

While Android and iOS users can now see the new Gemini icon, the web version at gemini.google.com has yet to reflect this update.

Android Widget Gets Refined, iOS Remains Static

In tandem with the icon refresh, the Android version of the Gemini app received improvements to its home screen widget—though no visual or functional changes were introduced on iOS. The widget now features direct-access shortcuts for video and screen sharing, making it easier to launch Gemini’s Live Modes instantly. Google subtly highlighted these enhancements within the widget settings interface.

Visually, the widget layout has been streamlined. It appears less cluttered, with some sizes displaying one fewer shortcut than before. For grid sizes of 3×3 or larger, users can access all eight available actions: Open App (with keyboard activation), Voice Input, Camera, Gallery, Files, Video, Screen Share, and Live Mode. The familiar "Ask Gemini" input has been condensed to a simplified “Gemini” bar, and Google has dropped the previously animated background, opting instead for a static presentation.

App Versions and Feature Rollout

As of Friday, the updated Gemini app version 1.0.776555963 is widely accessible through the Google Play Store. On iOS, version 1.2025.2562103 was released earlier on Wednesday, officially introducing a search feature to revisit past conversations—mirroring the functionality of the web version. Users can access this by tapping the chat icon in the top-left corner. Notably, this feature has not yet been rolled out to Android.
