Escalating Conflict in Congo
According to AFP, the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has reaffirmed his commitment to a full-scale military operation against Rwanda-backed militants advancing in the mineral-rich eastern region after seizing key locations.
The United Nations agencies have warned that the security situation in Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, is rapidly deteriorating due to clashes between rebels and government forces.
The M23 rebels control large parts of Goma, making it the epicenter of the conflict. Over the past three decades, eastern Congo has experienced persistent internal and cross-border tensions, partly linked to the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
Pakistan's Evacuation Efforts
In a statement, the Foreign Office spokesperson revealed that around 150 Pakistanis were trapped in Goma amid the escalating tensions.
- The Pakistan High Commission in Kigali has been in contact with affected Pakistanis, ensuring accommodation and food for them.
- Pakistani High Commissioner to Rwanda, Naeem Ullah Khan, played a crucial role in securing Rwandan authorities’ approval for Pakistanis to enter the country.
- So far, 75 Pakistanis have been safely moved to Rwanda, and efforts are ongoing to evacuate more individuals in the coming days.
