Imran Khan's Acquittal Plea Rejected in GHQ Attack Case

The acquittal plea of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and chairman, Imran Khan, in the GHQ attack case has been rejected.

Details

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan had filed an acquittal plea in the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in connection with the GHQ attack case. The hearing was conducted by ATC Judge Amjad Ali Shah in Rawalpindi.

The prosecutor opposed the plea, arguing that the trial is ongoing, and evidence from 12 witnesses has already been recorded. He maintained that it was not an appropriate time to consider the acquittal plea and that the prosecution should be allowed to present further evidence.

The prosecutor also pointed out that Sheikh Rashid's acquittal plea in a similar case was rejected by the ATC, and the High Court upheld the trial court's decision.

Subsequently, the judge rejected Imran Khan's acquittal plea.

Background

It is noteworthy that on May 9, 2023, following Imran Khan's arrest from the Islamabad High Court premises in the Al-Qadir Trust case, PTI launched nationwide protests.

During the protests, military, civil, and private installations were set on fire, causing significant damage to public and private property. At least eight people lost their lives, and 290 were injured during the unrest.

Protesters stormed the Corps Commander's residence in Lahore, also known as Jinnah House, and broke one of the gates of the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi.

In the aftermath, 1,900 individuals involved in clashes, vandalism, and arson were arrested across the country. Cases were also filed against Imran Khan and PTI workers.
