According to an Indian newspaper, Hemant Jain finally secured ownership of the shop after a prolonged legal battle. This shop once belonged to the notorious underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. The Income Tax Department had auctioned Dawood’s shop in 2001, which Hemant bought for INR 200,000. However, it took him over two decades of relentless legal struggles to acquire the official ownership.
The shop, located in a narrow lane of Mumbai’s Giraj Bhai Street, covers an area of 144 square feet. It was auctioned by the Income Tax Department on September 20, 2001. Hemant, with the assistance of his elder brother Piyush, purchased the property but faced numerous hurdles before finally registering it in his name on September 19, 2024.
The report stated that despite the registration, Dawood’s associates still occupy the shop, and Hemant has now initiated proceedings to reclaim possession.
After buying the property, Hemant encountered further complications as officials allegedly misled him, claiming a government-imposed restriction on transferring such properties. It took him years to realize that no such restriction existed.
Hemant shared with the newspaper, “I wrote dozens of letters to the Prime Minister’s Office and received responses occasionally, but the registration could not be completed due to missing files at the Income Tax Department.”
Eventually, Hemant had to file a case in a Mumbai court, arguing that since he bought the property in an official auction, its registration should be completed in his name. Following court directives, the registration was finalized on December 19, 2024, after he paid INR 150,000 in stamp duty and penalties.
Despite this victory, Hemant’s troubles persist. The shop remains occupied by individuals allegedly linked to Dawood Ibrahim, and they refuse to vacate. Hemant is now actively pursuing legal action to remove them and gain full control of the property.
