Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif received Azerbaijan’s Minister of Economy, Mikayil Jabbarov, who called on him in Islamabad accompanied by a high-level delegation. The visiting dignitary conveyed a message of goodwill from President Ilham Aliyev, reaffirming Azerbaijan’s commitment to deepening bilateral ties with Pakistan.
During the meeting, both sides expressed a shared resolve to enhance strategic cooperation and expand bilateral investments across diverse sectors. Prime Minister Sharif warmly welcomed the Azerbaijani delegation and highlighted the importance of consolidating economic collaboration between the two brotherly nations.
The discussions encompassed a broad range of areas, including but not limited to, mineral extraction, oil and gas exploration, renewable energy, information technology, infrastructure development for regional connectivity, defense cooperation, tourism and hospitality, and human capital development.
Reflecting on his recent official visit to Baku, Prime Minister Sharif emphasized the historic and fraternal bonds between Pakistan and Azerbaijan, rooted in common values, shared cultural heritage, mutual respect, and longstanding camaraderie. He reviewed the progress made on the implementation of bilateral MoUs and agreements signed during his visit and invited Azerbaijani investors to capitalize on Pakistan’s vast investment potential in the energy, mining, and infrastructure sectors.
The Prime Minister commended Azerbaijan’s initiative in the urban beautification of Islamabad following the declaration of Islamabad and Baku as sister cities. He also welcomed the forthcoming state visit of President Ilham Aliyev and underscored the mutual desire to elevate bilateral trade volume to $2 billion, expressing satisfaction at the high-level efforts undertaken to this end.
Minister Jabbarov, in turn, expressed deep appreciation for Pakistan’s warm hospitality and reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s strong interest in expanding economic ties. He acknowledged the progress in joint initiatives related to renewable energy, the white oil pipeline project, and infrastructure investments.
The Azerbaijani delegation was also briefed on progress in key areas of cooperation including the development of integrated service delivery centers to improve governance, Pakistan’s involvement in the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), and Azerbaijan’s potential investments in Pakistan’s motorway infrastructure for enhanced regional connectivity.
The meeting was attended by Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Pakistan Khazar Farhadov, Deputy Minister of Economy Samad Bashirli, Deputy Minister of Energy Kamal Abbasov, and other senior Azerbaijani officials. From the Pakistani side, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Federal Ministers Ahsan Iqbal, Muhammad Aurangzeb, Attaullah Tarar, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Ali Pervaiz Malik, Adviser to the Prime Minister Syed Tauqir Shah, Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi, State Bank Governor Jameel Ahmed, and Special Investment Facilitation Council’s National Coordinator Lt. Gen. Sarfraz Ahmed were also in attendance.
