Back in September 2024, Google TV unveiled a redesigned version of the Free TV app, bringing major improvements to usability. The new app featured a channel guide, enabling faster navigation across categories and letting users mark favorite channels for quicker access. Compared to the original, which forced users to scroll through channels one by one, this was a significant upgrade.
But just as quickly as it appeared, the app vanished.
By late October, the updated Free TV app was pulled from all devices except Google TV streamers, following a wave of crashes. Google later confirmed the withdrawal was due to stability issues affecting non-streaming devices.
Now, without much fanfare, the redesigned app has made a quiet comeback.
In recent weeks, the updated Free TV experience has resurfaced on various devices beyond streamers. We've verified that it's now running on Chromecast with Google TV (4K) and multiple Hisense Google TVs. The reappearance wasn’t officially announced, and it's unclear exactly when the update returned—but it’s back, and working.
