The Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O Edition) is now available through the Gemini API, Google’s Vertex AI, and AI Studio platforms, at the same pricing as the standard Gemini 2.5 Pro model. It is also integrated into Google's Gemini chatbot app for web and mobile users.
"We're excited to share the best coding model we've ever built!" the company stated, highlighting the model’s significantly enhanced programming abilities. The new version currently ranks #1 on both the LM Arena for coding and the WebDev Arena leaderboard.
The model's launch comes just ahead of Google’s annual I/O developer conference, hence the "I/O Edition" label. At the event, Google is expected to showcase several new models and AI-powered tools and platforms, as it competes for market and mindshare in the fast-paced AI race. Rivals like OpenAI and xAI are also expected to release high-performance models soon.
According to Google, the Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview (I/O Edition) features “notable” improvements in coding capabilities, especially for building and coding interactive web applications. It also performs better in tasks such as code transformation—editing code to achieve specific outcomes—and code editing.
In a blog post, Google noted that the new model leads the WebDev Arena leaderboard, which benchmarks models on their ability to create aesthetically pleasing and functional web applications. The model also demonstrated state-of-the-art performance in video comprehension, scoring 84.8% on the popular Video-MME benchmark.
Google emphasized that for developers already using Gemini 2.5 Pro, this new version will not only boost coding performance but also address key feedback—such as reducing errors in function calling and improving function call trigger rates.
