PTI Submits Resolution in National Assembly Against New Canals from Indus River

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has submitted a resolution in the National Assembly Secretariat opposing the construction of new canals from the Indus River and announced plans to seek support from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), and the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA).

The resolution was submitted to Speaker Ayaz Sadiq by PTI MNAs Zartaj Gul, Ahmad Chattha, and Ali Muhammad Khan on behalf of Opposition Leader in the National Assembly, Omar Ayub.

PTI also declared its intention to gain backing for the resolution from PPP, MQM, and GDA.

Speaking to the media, PTI leader Zartaj Gul said there is growing concern in Sindh over the new canals. She criticized the government for making such sensitive decisions without convening a meeting of the Council of Common Interests (CCI). She urged the National Assembly Speaker to schedule a debate on the resolution regarding the canals from the Indus River in the assembly agenda and to hold an open discussion on the matter. She reiterated the demand for convening a CCI meeting.

When a journalist pointed out the contradiction of PTI accusing Asif Ali Zardari of selling Sindh’s water while simultaneously seeking support from his party for the resolution, Ali Muhammad Khan responded: “Find out why Asif Ali Zardari fell ill. If he chaired the meeting at the Presidency where the approval for these canals was given, then who sold Sindh’s water? If Zardari, as President, presided over the meeting that approved the canals, then he alone is responsible.”

He added, “Had PTI been given the Form 45 results, we would have formed a government in Sindh as well. PTI stands with the people of Sindh on the canal issue.”
