According to a report published in Forbes, 16 billion login credentials and passwords were exposed in the breach. In response, Google has advised its billions of users to change their passwords, while the FBI has warned Americans not to open any suspicious links received via SMS.
Researchers from Cybernews discovered in their analysis that there are anywhere from millions to more than 3.5 billion records in each of the 30 data sets that were made public.
Out of all these data sets, only one had not been previously seen, which means the affected data is considered new.
According to researchers, this is a plan for widespread exploitation rather than a single breach. This information is ground zero for phishing attacks and account hacking.
They warned that these are not old breaches resurfacing, but fresh data breaches.
