Government Delegation Meets Fazlur Rehman, PTI Leaders Return Without Meeting

The government reached out to Fazlur Rehman seeking his support for the proposed constitutional amendment. The Minister for Law and the Interior Minister visited the JUI-F leader’s residence to ask for his backing, while the PTI delegation left without meeting him.

According to sources, the government delegation arrived at Fazlur Rehman's residence before the PTI team. The delegation, including Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, met with Maulana Fazlur Rehman. They briefed him on the proposed constitutional amendment and judicial reforms, taking him into confidence.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership also arrived at Maulana Fazlur Rehman's residence to seek support for the constitutional amendment. However, upon seeing the government officials, the PTI leaders left without meeting the JUI-F chief.

The PTI delegation included Barrister Gohar, Umar Ayub, Asad Qaiser, and Sahibzada Hamid Raza.

It is important to note that the government lacks the support of eight members to achieve a majority for the constitutional amendments. Both the opposition and the government are striving to win over Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s support. Earlier, the Prime Minister had also met with the JUI-F leader late at night, attempting to persuade him and offering a place in the government.

Sources revealed that Maulana Fazlur Rehman gave a clear response to the Prime Minister, refusing to offer his support.

Constitutional Amendment: Government Seeks Support from 8 Independent Members After Supreme Court's Clarification

The clarification from the Supreme Court's majority bench has put the government in a new challenge, increasing the difficulties surrounding the constitutional reforms.

Following the Supreme Court’s clarification, the government is now focused on securing a two-thirds majority in the National Assembly for the approval of judicial constitutional reforms by seeking the support of 8 independent members backed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Even with the support of JUI-F, the government still requires the backing of 2 independent members for the constitutional amendment. As a result, the government has begun reaching out to independent members to secure their support.

The independent members backed by PTI include opposition leader Umar Ayub, Barrister Gohar, Muhammad Aslam Ghuman from NA-74, Usman Ali from NA-142, Zahoor Ahmed Qureshi from NA-146, Aurangzeb Kachi from NA-159, Ali Asghar Khan from NA-16, and Mubarak Zeb from NA-18.

The 8 independent members supported by PTI in the National Assembly have neither declared any party affiliation on their nomination papers nor have they become part of the Sunni Ittehad Council.
