Labor shortages aren’t just a problem for warehouses. Since the onset of the pandemic, restaurants worldwide have struggled with staffing shortages. In response, various startups have stepped in with automation solutions designed to reduce the number of workers required to keep kitchens running and meals served.
There are now multiple robotic systems tailored for commercial kitchens. One of the most well-known is Miso Robotics, famous for its robotic arm that flips burgers.
Meet Botinkit
Botinkit, abbreviated as "Bot-In-Kitchen," takes a different approach, foregoing flashy robotic arms for a design more akin to standard kitchen appliances. It doesn’t look like a traditional robot; in fact, it resembles a self-service kiosk, complete with a touchscreen interface. Designed to operate safely within kitchens, the system requires minimal human oversight.
The Omni system, developed by the Shenzhen-based startup, can cook, fry, and stew a variety of dishes with minimal human input. According to the company, integrating the Omni system can reduce kitchen labor requirements by nearly half.
CEO’s Vision for the Future
Shirley Chen, Botinkit’s CEO, shared her insights :
"When I think about what kitchens will look like in 10 years, I imagine something entirely different from the traditional setups we see today. That’s why we decided to start with the most challenging tasks—the chef’s responsibilities. Achieving consistency is difficult with human chefs because so much relies on individual judgment."
When Chen co-founded Botinkit in 2021, she was uniquely positioned to understand the challenges restaurants face, drawing from her experience as both a strategist at KPMG and a restaurant owner.
Investors Take Notice
The company has gained significant investor interest, announcing $13 million in Series A funding in July 2023, which later expanded to $21 million.
Expanding Horizons
Asia remains Botinkit’s largest market, but the company is rapidly expanding into Europe and the U.S. The latest funding round will further enhance its international reach, signaling its ambition to transform kitchens worldwide.
