Although it's not yet live, Google claims that Pixel's "Now Playing" feature will allow you to set a default music app.
The Google Pixel's "Now Playing" feature, which detects surrounding music, has long been one of its best features. Setting a default music app is one of the new features that Google appears to be working on.
Google is working on an upgraded "Enhance Now Playing" function that would enable album art to appear next to identified tracks, as was revealed in November. There is still opportunity for more features, though, as this version has not yet gone live.
Pixel users will soon be able to designate Now Playing as their default music player, according to a recent change to a Google support website. This feature is said to replace the present procedure where a menu appears each time to ask which app you'd like to use by enabling users to automatically choose a favorite app for accessing songs.
Google describes how to use the Now Playing settings to activate this feature:
To make the music app of your choice the default:
- Launch the Settings app on your phone.
- Select the default music player by tapping Sound & Vibration > Now Playing.
- Choose the music app of your choice.
This functionality isn't available yet, though, suggesting that it will be included in a future Google update that hasn't been released yet.
Android Police was the first to notice this change, pointing out that as of mid-November, this section was missing from the help website. As of right now, there is no formal launch date for this functionality.
