Pebble Smartwatches Are Officially Making a Comeback
Earlier this week, Google open-sourced Pebble’s software, allowing older Pebble smartwatches to stay functional. But this move has also paved the way for new Pebble hardware.
The "Rebble" project has quickly been framed as a reboot for Pebble smartwatches, with new devices in development.
“A small team and I are working on a new Pebble-inspired smartwatch that runs an open-source version of Pebble OS. It will feature the same beloved functions (along with some exciting new additions) while staying true to Pebble’s original vision.”
While this news is exciting, many questions remain about what the new smartwatch will look like.
To gain insights, we spoke with Eric Migicovsky, Pebble’s former founder, who is now leading the efforts to build new hardware.
What Will the New Pebble Look Like?
The original Pebble smartwatch wasn’t exactly a design icon—it was bulky, had large bezels, and hasn’t aged particularly well. However, Pebble did release some more refined models later.
The Pebble 2, the last smartwatch Pebble released before being acquired by Fitbit, was a big step forward—thinner, more modern-looking, and still stylish even after nearly a decade.
According to Migicovsky, the new model will be heavily inspired by the Pebble 2. While other design options are being considered, he confirmed that a Pebble 2-like form factor is the most likely choice.
This is great news from a cost perspective, as the Pebble 2 originally launched for just $129 in 2016.
How Will Pebble Change in 2025?
With 10 years between the original Pebble and this new version, some changes are inevitable. Smartwatches today are more advanced, feature-packed, and focused on health tracking.
Pebble did introduce heart rate sensors before shutting down, opening the door for basic health tracking. However, 2025’s Pebble will keep things simple.
“The goal is to do the basics well when it comes to health tracking. If you want fancy features, get an Apple Watch or a Garmin.”
This suggests the new Pebble will focus on essentials like step tracking, sleep monitoring, and other basic health stats—which makes sense for a minimalist smartwatch.
How Will Pebble OS Evolve?
When asked about new features, Migicovsky emphasized watch face complications—the small widgets that display information on watch faces.
“I think complications are a great way to deliver timely information.”
Apple and Google have already made complications a key part of their smartwatch platforms. While Pebble did support them on select watch faces, they were never a major focus.
When Will the New Pebble Launch?
There’s no official release timeline yet. According to Migicovsky, “there’s still a lot of work to do.”
Since Google only open-sourced Pebble OS this week, development is still in its early stages. However, the goal seems to be getting the new smartwatch into users’ hands sometime this year.
Can You Still Use an Original Pebble in 2025?
Yes! If you’re feeling nostalgic, you can still use an original Pebble smartwatch today. Both the hardware and software have held up surprisingly well over the years.
However, setting up a Pebble in 2025 isn’t as easy as it used to be. If you need help, check out the setup guide below.
