According to Apple’s latest data, around 68% of all iPhones are now running iOS 18, with the adoption rate rising to 76% for models released in the past four years.
However, it seems that users are not in a rush to adopt Apple’s newest artificial intelligence features, such as Apple Intelligence. The adoption rate for iOS 18 is comparable to last year’s iOS 17 adoption, which was only slightly higher by 2%, according to 9to5Mac.
iPad users are also not quick to download the latest operating system. Just over half of all iPads—53%—are running iPadOS 18, with the adoption rate climbing to 63% for tablets released in the last four years. A notable 10% of users are still using older versions, such as iPadOS 17. iOS 18 was released in October 2024, followed by iOS 18.2 in December, which included AI-powered writing tools, ChatGPT integration, Type-to-Siri capabilities, and Notification Summaries (though some high-profile bugs were present).
iOS 18 also introduced a highly customizable interface compared to previous versions, allowing users to personalize their iPhone’s home and lock screens more freely. Additionally, the update brought a redesigned and more modern Photos app, as well as Rich Communication Services (RCS), making it easier for iPhone users to share images with Android users.
Apple is preparing to release iOS 18.3 next week, which will feature additional Apple Intelligence capabilities, including Visual Intelligence. This feature will allow users to identify plants and animals by pointing their phone’s camera at them, and it may also help identify potential allergens. Apple Intelligence will be enabled by default, although users can opt out.
Despite the rollout of Apple Intelligence, there hasn’t been a significant boost in interest among smartphone buyers. According to IDC data, iPhone sales dropped by 4.1% globally in the fourth quarter of 2024.
