According to the issued statement, a meeting was held in Karachi, co-chaired by the Provincial Minister for Education, Syed Sardar Ali Shah, and the Minister for Prisons, Ali Hassan Zardari. The meeting was attended by Secretary of School Education Zahid Ali Abbasi, Secretary of Universities and Boards Abbas Baloch, Secretary of College Education Asif Ikram, IG Prisons Qazi Nazir Ahmed, representatives from the Home Department, Non-Formal Education, Directorate of Private Institutions, Sindh Education Foundation, STVETA, and the social organization Pegham Pakistan, led by Professor Miraj Siddiqui.
The statement mentioned that the meeting discussed proposals to support the education of prisoners' children. Social organization Pegham Pakistan presented suggestions to assist in the education of children of convicted prisoners.
Minister for Education Syed Sardar Ali Shah stated that the punishment for a person's mistake should not be inflicted upon their family, especially children. He emphasized that it is the state's responsibility to enforce the law and also to educate children. Shah mentioned that this initiative to provide education from school to university level, including non-formal and technical education, for the children of convicted prisoners would be the first model of its kind in the world. He added that this model would serve as a pathway for jails in other provinces of Pakistan. The goal is to educate and transform the children of convicted prisoners into responsible and patriotic citizens.
According to the Minister for Education of Sindh, the aim is to turn the children of prisoners into responsible citizens rather than future prisoners. He assured that every possible support would be provided to help these children complete their education.
Minister for Prisons Ali Hassan Zardari expressed that they also wish to educate those children of prisoners who have not been able to complete their education due to family issues.
The statement revealed that a committee has been established to collect details of prisoners' children receiving education from jails. The committee will work with prisoners to gather information about their children's education.
