Google Play Store Showing Repeated Android App Updates

On Friday evening, Google Play Store began prompting Android users to update apps they had already installed. This isn't the first time this bug has appeared.

In a screenshot of pending downloads, apps like Gboard, Google Messages, Pocket Casts, and The Athletic show no update size—just a timestamp indicating when they were last updated.

After tapping "Update" on these four apps, their version numbers remain unchanged. The Play Store still downloads small data packets (around 1–2MB) and goes through the "Installing" process, seemingly reapplying the same version that’s already on the device.

Other apps listed in the update queue correctly advance their version numbers, indicating that both Google and third-party apps are affected by this issue.

There’s no noticeable problem with these "updated" apps, so aside from wasting a few megabytes of data, there’s no real impact on users. It appears to be a bug, but it's unclear whether these repeated updates are actually necessary or if Google Play will eventually stop pushing them. We’ve observed this behavior across multiple Google accounts on Android 14 (Samsung) and Android 15 (Pixel) devices.
