Google Exploring Stackable Android Widgets

Google Exploring Stackable Android Widgets

To wrap up Widgets Spotlight Week, the Android team hosted a YouTube Q&A session where they discussed the status of stackable widgets and whether they might come to Android XR.

While acknowledging that some Android manufacturers already support stackable widgets, Google mentioned that it is "exploring the idea within AOSP" but hasn't committed to implementing it yet.

What Could Google’s Stackable Widgets Look Like?

Samsung’s One UI already offers widget stacking, allowing users to swipe left or right between widgets. If Google develops its own version, it may take a similar approach—possibly incorporating vertical scrolling like Android’s app launcher or notifications panel.

Google’s Philosophy on Widget Functionality

Google also shared its perspective on how much functionality a widget should have:

"A widget shouldn’t simply replicate everything that happens inside the app. We’re not trying to recreate the full app UI on the home screen. Instead, a good rule of thumb is to focus on solving a single key user journey. If you need multiple features, consider using multiple widgets, each excelling at one task."

Widgets in Android XR?

When asked about widgets in Android XR, Google acknowledged their potential but stated that no concrete plans exist yet.

One could imagine widgets floating in the user’s line of sight, similar to a Google Home control panel on a wall or music playback controls for quick interactions.
