Google Keep Will Continue ‘Text Notes by Default’ Setting on Android

Google Keep Will Continue ‘Text Notes by Default’

In its November revamp, Google Keep for Android introduced a floating action button (FAB) menu, making note creation a multi-step process. Now, Google is shifting focus toward a ‘Text Notes by Default’ setting.

A new toggle for "Create text notes by default" has been added under Settings, though it remains disabled by default.

With this setting off, tapping the corner FAB opens a new text note immediately, allowing users to begin typing without additional steps. To create other note types, users must press and hold the FAB instead.

Additionally, Google Keep is bringing back the quick-access shortcut for audio notes. However, speech-to-text functionality remains unchanged. Previously, this feature was removed, requiring users to first open a note before accessing the ‘+’ menu. The FAB menu, now including five options, has been slightly expanded.

Rollout & Additional Features

Google initiated development of this feature in January, and it is gradually rolling out via a server-side update. It has been spotted in Google Keep version 5.25.102.01.90, though availability is currently limited to select devices.

Meanwhile, Google Keep has introduced a "Reload My Account" button at the bottom of the Settings menu.
