Rekindling the AI Browser Wars with Microsoft: How to Use Edge's New Copilot Mode

Microsoft has reignited competition in the browser space by introducing a new experimental “Copilot Mode” for Edge, giving its AI assistant full visibility across your open tabs to proactively offer smart suggestions and shortcuts.

Available as an opt-in feature on both Windows and macOS, this mode allows Copilot to see what you’re browsing and dynamically assist you. When activated, opening a new tab replaces the traditional address bar with a unified search-and-chat box, where you can visit sites, search topics, or chat with Copilot. It also observes active tabs and interjects with helpful recommendations.

Microsoft’s demo illustrates its power: while researching vacation spots, activities, and lodging across multiple tabs, Copilot can instantly suggest nearby beach activities from a separate tab, streamlining trip planning.

“Copilot understands your intent, gives you a head start, and can even take over certain tasks,” Microsoft explains. “It transforms your browser into a decision-making and productivity tool, helping you compare, choose, and execute tasks faster.”

With built-in voice navigation, you can talk directly to Copilot, and Microsoft is exploring future enhancements that could allow it to leverage your browsing history and credentials for even deeper integration.

For example, simply saying ‘Find me a paddleboard rental near my office’ could lead Copilot to find the best vendor, check weather conditions, book the rental, and even recommend sunscreen or tutorial videos—all within the browser.

Copilot Mode is rolling out today, with a pop-up prompt inviting users to enable it. It can also be manually activated via a provided link. Microsoft hasn’t revealed how long this will stay experimental or when a full rollout might occur, but noted that it’s “free for a limited time,” hinting at a possible paid subscription in the future.
