Acer Surprises Market with Feature-Packed Google TV Box

Acer Surprises Market with Feature-Packed Google TV Box

Most Google TV streaming boxes suffer from a lack of connectivity, but a new contender is breaking that mold—and surprisingly, it comes from Acer.

Acer is well known for producing laptops, displays, desktops, Chromebooks, and the rare Android tablet. But a Google TV box? That’s a curveball. Still, the company is preparing to roll out exactly that.

A preorder page in South Africa—suggesting the device isn’t yet aimed at the broader global market—reveals Acer’s upcoming “4K UHD Google TV Box.” The unit itself is a plain white rectangle with the Acer logo stamped in the corner, paired with Google’s standard reference-design remote.

What sets it apart is the sheer number of ports.

The gadget has both a USB-A and a USB-C connector on the side. Around the back, you’ll find HDMI, Ethernet, optical audio, a microSD card slot, plus another USB-C port for power.

Specs remain somewhat vague. Acer’s listing mentions a “quad-core Amlogic CPU,” likely the S905X5, along with Wi-Fi 6 and 2GB of RAM. However, Android Authority cites a press release suggesting the unit may actually pack 3GB of RAM, leaving some uncertainty about its final configuration.

It is significant that a company with Acer's background enters this market.  It’s just unfortunate that—for now—the release appears limited. Wider availability remains unclear.

Would you consider picking up Acer’s Google TV box if it reached your market?
