Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that Pakistan faces challenges from climate change and has experienced severe flooding, with the 2022 floods causing $30 billion in damages.
Speaking at the NDMA's National Emergencies Operation Center project, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif mentioned that Pakistan had previously faced devastating floods, but through joint efforts between the provinces and the federal government, they ensured the rehabilitation of the affected.
The Prime Minister highlighted that Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were the most severely affected by the floods, and the resulting damage to Pakistan amounted to $30 billion, which could not be fully compensated even in the following years.
Shehbaz Sharif noted that the federal government spent 100 billion rupees to address the flood-related situation. The provinces and the federal government collectively played a significant role in tackling the worst floods of 2022, with NDMA and other institutions working together.
He further added that NDMA played a crucial role during the flood situation, and they would provide the necessary resources and equipment to NDMA in collaboration with the provinces to develop a comprehensive plan.
The Prime Minister mentioned that a donors' conference was held in Geneva to address the flood devastations, where Pakistan raised a strong voice. He praised NDMA's climate change-related system, noting that it serves as a model for other sectors.
Shehbaz Sharif also mentioned that extensive work is being done on climate change, and investments are being made in IT in Pakistan. He commended NDMA for its use of IT, allocating a significant budget for the IT sector, including 80 billion rupees to promote IT development.
