The Election Commission Registers Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s Party, Awam Pakistan

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has officially registered former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s party, the ‘Awam Pakistan Party’.

According to the Election Commission, the notification states that Shahid Khaqan Abbasi will serve as the party convener, while Miftah Ismail has been appointed as the General Secretary.

The report further mentions that the ECP has also accepted the intra-party elections of Awam Pakistan. The party submitted details of its intra-party elections on June 26.

With the registration of Awam Pakistan, the total number of registered political parties in the Election Commission has now reached 168.

It should be noted that on February 1, 2023, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi confirmed his resignation from the position of Senior Vice President of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), stating that Maryam Nawaz should be given an ‘open field’.

Abbasi mentioned that he had submitted his resignation as Senior Vice President to party president Shehbaz Sharif when Maryam Nawaz was appointed Chief Organizer.

The former Prime Minister also stated that he would not accept any party position again, adding that the party had honored him greatly and that Nawaz Sharif had made special arrangements for his election from Lahore.

He reiterated that PML-N remains his home, as he has been with the party for 35 years, and it brought him to the highest office in the country. He also affirmed his intention to contest the next election on a PML-N ticket.

Additionally, a report in the daily ‘Jang’ had indicated that Shahid Khaqan Abbasi resigned from the position of Vice President of PML-N and decided to promote the message of national welfare through the ‘Reimagining Pakistan’ forum for the betterment of the country.

The report claimed that Abbasi was displeased with the appointment of Maryam Nawaz to a senior position in the party without consulting senior leadership.
