The Murena Pixel Tablet runs on the open-source /e/OS operating system instead of Google’s version of Android. This promises a “privacy-focused Android experience” on the device’s 10.95-inch LCD display.
Murena states that the tablet offers a more secure experience by minimizing data tracking and eliminating Google’s data-collecting services, all while maintaining performance and versatility. The company added this tablet to its hardware lineup in response to “high demand” for devices pre-installed with /e/OS.
The Pixel Tablet, equipped with 128GB of internal storage and 8GB of RAM, is available for purchase from Murena’s online store at €539 (or $549 in the U.S.).
Since it’s de-Googled, the tablet does not include the Google Play Store. Instead, /e/OS offers the App Lounge, a marketplace where users can anonymously download apps from both Google Play and F-Droid. However, accessing paid apps still requires signing in with a Google account. (For more details on Murena’s app store workaround, check out our previous review of /e/OS.)
While completely replicating the Google ecosystem without any links to it remains a challenge, Murena is working on privacy-friendly alternatives to services like Google Drive and Office 365. Pixel Tablet users can access Workspace, a freemium file storage, backup, and office suite that offers 1GB of free storage, with additional paid plans available.
