The Photo Stacks feature has been available for over a year, automatically grouping similar images taken within a short time into a neat "stack." It’s a great tool for saving space and managing duplicate shots. However, despite its usefulness, managing Photo Stacks hasn’t been the most intuitive process—something Google now seems to be addressing.
What's Changing?
Currently, accessing more information about photos in a stack requires swiping up, after which users can choose actions like setting a top image or deleting multiple shots. While this provides full control, it isn’t ideal for quick interactions.
With the new UI update, users will have a more convenient and faster contextual menu by simply tapping an arrow on the stack.
New Contextual Menu Commands:
- Set as Top Selection
- Keep One, Delete the Rest
- Remove from Stack
- Unstack
- Multi-Select
- Manage Stacks
The multi-select function remains unchanged, still allowing users to pick multiple photos for removal or other common actions. The Manage Stacks option, however, will provide more granular control over stacks.
Though this is a small quality-of-life improvement, it will significantly enhance workflow for those who frequently use Photo Stacks in Google Photos. There’s no official timeline for when this UI update will fully roll out.
