Potential Drought Due to Low Rainfall: Risk to Rabi Season and Rice Crop

The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert regarding a potential drought due to reduced rainfall in the province.

The PDMA Punjab has officially declared a drought alert and has sent notifications to all commissioners, deputy commissioners, and relevant institutions across the province.

In the letter addressed to Punjab’s commissioners, deputy commissioners, and relevant authorities, it was stated that, according to the Meteorological Department, Punjab received 38% less rainfall during the winter season. As a result, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, and Rahim Yar Khan face a higher risk of drought. The lack of rainfall could negatively impact Rabi crops, and a decline in rice production could lead to financial losses for farmers.

According to PDMA, preparations have been completed to address the expected water shortage in Thal and Cholistan. However, authorities have been advised to remain on high alert and provide farmers with early warnings about the potential water crisis.

PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia has instructed that the School Education Department be involved in awareness campaigns regarding the anticipated water shortage. He emphasized that precautionary measures are essential to protecting crops and livestock from potential damage.
