Google Reminds Pixel Owners About the Handy ‘Palm Timer’ Feature for Rear Cameras

In a new community post, Google is reminding Pixel owners about an often-overlooked camera feature—Palm Timer.

As part of the March 2025 Feature Drop, Pixel devices received several new updates. Now, Google has clarified that the Palm Timer feature works not only with the front camera but also with the rear camera.

Although Palm Timer has always functioned with rear-facing cameras, Google previously highlighted it primarily for front cameras—except on devices like the Pixel Fold and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. With Google Camera 9.8, introduced in the latest update, Google has officially confirmed that Palm Timer now works with both front and rear cameras on Pixel 6 and newer models.

How Palm Timer Works

This feature detects when a person in the frame raises their hand with an open palm, triggering a short countdown timer to take a photo. It’s a convenient tool for hands-free selfies, eliminating the need to fiddle with settings or timers manually.

In a forum post this week, Google not only reminded users about this feature but also provided instructions on how to enable or disable it.

Say Goodbye to Selfie Sticks and Rushed Timer Shots!

With Palm Timer on Google Pixel, capturing selfies or group shots from a distance is easier than ever. It works with both front and rear cameras. Simply raise your palm to start the countdown—no need for complicated setups!

How to Enable or Disable Palm Timer

📌 Note: The feature is enabled by default.

  1. Open the Google Camera app.

  2. Go to Settings > More Settings > Palm Timer.

  3. Toggle the feature ON or OFF.

How to Use Palm Timer

  1. When ready to take a photo, raise your palm in front of the camera—almost like waving.

  2. Lower your hand to activate the timer.

  3. Strike a pose and let the camera do the rest!

While using Palm Timer with the rear camera can be tricky—since there’s no preview of the shot—pairing it with a Pixel Watch preview makes it an excellent tool for high-quality group photos, offering better resolution than front-facing cameras.
