ChatGPT Users Have Generated Over 700 Million Images Since Last Week: OpenAI

OpenAI’s new image generation feature is on track to become one of the company’s most successful product launches.

According to Brad Lightcap, who oversees OpenAI’s daily operations and global deployment, since the upgraded image generator was launched in ChatGPT on March 25, more than 130 million users have generated over 700 million images.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Lightcap expressed gratitude for users' patience, stating, “We appreciate your patience as we work to serve everyone. The team is working around the clock.”

He also highlighted that India is now the fastest-growing market for ChatGPT.

OpenAI’s new image generator, which became available to all ChatGPT users earlier this week, has gone viral due to its ability to create highly realistic, Ghibli-style images. This surge in popularity has been a double-edged sword for OpenAI—bringing in millions of new sign-ups while also significantly increasing the strain on the company’s infrastructure.

According to CEO Sam Altman, the overwhelming demand for the image generator has led to delays and temporary service disruptions as OpenAI works to scale its infrastructure to meet user needs.
