The company revealed that it explored "various designs for the rear camera bump" and even released a low-resolution image showcasing some of these options.
These design studies focused on both the shape and aesthetics of the rear camera housing, as well as how different forms would perform in terms of impact resistance and durability.
Some of the designs closely resemble the final version, with one prominent example being a pill-shaped bump with minimal curvature—similar to what ultimately appeared on the Pixel 9a.
One early concept showed a camera bump stretching across the full width of the device, evoking the design language of the Pixel 9 and 9 Pro, but without the raised height. Some users might have preferred this design as a nod to continuity. Another concept, featured at the end of the row, displayed a vertical pill shape that subtly resembled the iPhone's signature camera square.
“This is its own device, but it still feels like a Pixel—and that was the goal. It belongs in the family,” said Sonia Jobanputra, Director of Product Management for Pixel devices. “But this time, it feels more like a cousin of our premium lineup rather than a little sibling.”
In terms of hardware engineering, Google replaced the standard panel with a thinner plastic OLED (pOLED), which allowed for more internal space for the battery. This change also enabled a slimmer rear camera bump, all while maintaining the phone’s durable mid-frame structure.
“We weren’t trying to outperform the Pixel 8a,” Sonia noted. “The 8a already delivered great results. But by switching to a new pOLED panel, we improved both brightness and power efficiency.”
As a result, the peak brightness increased from 2,000 to 2,700 nits.
Google also confirmed that the new "Iris" color variant for the Pixel 9a is inspired by the fan-favorite "Purple-ish" tone from the Pixel 3 series. “At first glance, Iris might appear blue or purple,” Google explained. “It’s calm yet confident, and despite being expressive, it maintains broad appeal—making it a perfect hero color for the new A-series.”
Meanwhile, the Pixel 9a’s official case comes with a clear cutout around the camera and flash area, allowing users to see the internal color of the phone without removing the case.
